In a showdown that had the MMA world talking, Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka went toe-to-toe for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship at UFC 295 in November 2023 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was a violent affair, with both fighters displaying their skills and determination. Pereira ultimately emerged victorious, stopping Prochazka with a brutal TKO in the second round. Prochazka protested the stoppage, claiming that the fight was stopped prematurely, and has been clamouring for a rematch ever since.

Divisions without champion

In the world of mixed martial arts, few divisions have been as tumultuous as the UFC’s light heavyweight division. Over the past few years, the championship belt has been vacated multiple times due to injuries, leaving the division in a state of constant flux.

The first instance of a light heavyweight champion vacating the title due to injury occurred in November 2022, when Jiri Prochazka suffered a shoulder injury. Prochazka, who had won the title by defeating Glover Teixeira at UFC 275, was forced to relinquish the belt and allow the division to move forward. The fight was a back-and-forth affair, with Prochazka surviving on the ground for much of the fight before pulling off a submission with just 30 seconds left in the fight.

Jamahal Hill vacates the belt

In July 2023, Jamahal Hill suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon that required surgery and forced him to vacate the title. Hill had won the belt by defeating Glover Teixeira at UFC 283 in January 2023 and was expected to defend it against Prochazka.

The title was then left vacant once again, Alex due to his incredible performance in the middleweight division was granted his first-ever Light heavyweight debut fight against the former champion Jan Blachowich at UFC 291. Pereira won the fight by split decision, becoming the new no.1 contender for the vacant light-heavyweight championship.

Alex Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka: 1st Match

The title was then left vacant, setting the stage for a showdown between Prochazka and Pereira. Pereira was a former middleweight champion who had recently moved up to the light heavyweight division after going through the Middleweight division against the likes of Israel Adesanya, arguably considered the Middleweight GOAT and Sean Strickland, both via Knockout. He defended his Middleweight championship against Israel in a rematch, but lost via Knockout, and later decided to move up the weight class to Light Heavyweight.

The fight was highly anticipated, not only because of the vacant title but also because of the intriguing matchup between Prochazka and Pereira. Prochazka, known for his unorthodox fighting style and relentless aggression, was looking to reclaim his throne. On the other hand, Pereira, a former kickboxing champion, was looking to make a statement in his new weight class.

Came the day of the fight, the fight started with both fighters showing respect for each other, but it didn’t take long for the action to heat up. Prochazka, true to his style, came out swinging, looking to land his signature uppercuts and spinning attacks. Pereira, however, was unfazed and used his superior striking skills to keep Prochazka at bay.

In the second round, Prochazka tried to change his approach, but Pereira’s relentless pressure and precise striking proved to be too much. A devastating combination of punches and elbows from Pereira sent Prochazka crashing to the canvas, and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight.

Pereira’s victory was a historic one, as he became the first fighter in UFC history to win a championship belt in two different weight classes in such a short period of time. The Brazilian was ecstatic in his post-fight interview, calling out former middleweight champion Israel Adesanya to meet him at 205 pounds (92.99 kg) for a chance to unify the belts.

Accusations and Replies

In the lead-up to the rematch, Prochazka made headlines by accusing Pereira of using “magic” and “shamans” to win their first fight. Prochazka claimed that Pereira had some sort of supernatural advantage, which he believed contributed to his loss.

Pereira, however, was quick to dismiss these accusations. In an interview with MMA Junkie, Pereira stated, “I don’t need magic or shamans to win. I have my skills, my training, and my team. I respect Jiri, but these accusations are just distractions.”

As the fight approaches, both Pereira and Prochazka are focused on the task at hand. Pereira is determined to prove that his victory was no fluke, while Prochazka is looking to avenge his loss and reclaim the light heavyweight title.

As if the UFC 303 card was not already going through too much change with Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler causing the domino effect, this matchup went through the worst ones ever. At UFC 303, Anthony Smith was initially set to face Carlos Ulberg. This matchup came about after a series of changes in the light heavyweight division. Originally, Jamahal Hill was scheduled to fight Khalil Rountree, but Rountree was suspended due to a positive drug test.

Carlos Ulberg stepped in as a replacement for Rountree against Hill, but Hill was then forced out due to a knee injury. As a result, Smith was called in to fight Ulberg on short notice. However, Ulberg also withdrew from the fight, and Roman Dolidze was brought in to replace him against Smith.

Brian Ortega vs. Diego Lopes
